"The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that determine Personal Success" by Andy Andrews - A synopsis

The main character David Ponder was a successful executive until his role was made redundant due to the recent acquisition of the company he works for. He had difficulty finding another role in a similar capacity....his wife decided to clean houses or others. He finally decided to work in a car shop. His wife earns more than him cleaning houses.

Then, their only daughter gets sick with tonsilitis and needs operaton. He got fired while his wife told David the situation over the phone. They can't afford the operation because they didnt renew their health insurance. David decided to commit suicide, speeding up the highway. The only insurance left for them was his life insurance. THis is when he began travelling through time (I know! Kid's sci-fi isnt it?).

Through his travels, he met people of history who epected him through dreams. They each have a lesson to give him both in dialogue, and a piece of paper for him to take back with him.

7 Decisions for personal success:

1. The buck stops here. I am responsible for my past and my future. (Harry Truman - Potsdam, Germany)

You are where you are because of your thinking. Your thinking dictates your decisions. Decisions are choices....until a person takes responsibility for where he is, there is no basis for moving on. The bad news is that the past was in your hands, but the good news is that the future, my friend, is also in your hands.

2. I will seek wisdom. I will be a servant to others. (King Solomon)

Jehovah moves mountains to create the opportunity of His choosing. It is up to you to be ready to move yourself....Though wisdom is available to many, she is found by few. Seek wisdom. Find her, and you will find success and contentment....We as humans, are always in a process of change. Therefore, we might as well guide the direction in which we change.

3. I am a person of action. I seize the moment. I choose now. (Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania US Civil War)

I have deep within me the inability to do nothing. I may die today, but I will not die with a bullet in my back...When I am faced with the choice of doing nothing or doing something, I will always choose to act.

4. I have a decided heart. My destiny is assured. (Christopher Columbus)

Truth is truth. If a thousand people believe something foolish, it is still foolish. Truth is never dependent upon consensus of opinion...Poor is the man whose future depends on the opinions and permission of others.

Passion is a product of the heart. Passion is what helps you when you have a great dream. Passion breeds conviction and turns mediocrity into excellence....We will find land, but that will be the least of your discoveries...you will find a heart for success that you did not know existed. You will find greatness.

Most people fail at whatever they attempt because of an undecided heart...Success requires the emotional balance of a comitted heart. When confronted with a challenge, the committed heart will search for a solution. The undecided heart searches for an escape....A committed heart does not wait for conditions to be exactly right. Why? Because conditions are never exactly right. Indecision limits the Almighty and His ability to perform miracles in your life. He has put the vision in you - proceed!

5. Today I will choose to be happy. I am the possessor of a grateful spirit. (Anne Frank, Holland)

Our very lives are fashioned by choice...First we make choices. Then our choices make us....My life - my personality, my habits, even my speech - is a combination of the books I choose to read, the people I choose to listen to, and the thoughts I choose to tolerate in my mind....I do not deny the reality of our situation I deny the finality of it. This too, shall pass....Both of us must remember that life itself is a privilege, but to live life to its fullest - well, that is a choice!

6. I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I will forgive myself. (Abraham Lincoln - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania)

But to do great deeds, great power is essential. Do not run from power. Gather it as you would the finest fruit. Power in the hands of a good person is like a cool drink of water on a hot summer day. It refreshes everyone with whom it comes in contact....When you become a person whom others want to be around, you will have become a person of influence....If you are determined to win, you will have to surround ouyself with winners.

The secret of forgiveness...it costs nothing and is worth millions. It is available to everyone and used by few. It you harness the power of forgiveness, you will be revered, sought after, and wealthy.

7. I will persist without exception. I am a person of great faith. (Angel Gabriel)

Do you consider yourelf a man of faith? Does faith guide your everyday actions and emotions? All men are dirven by faith or fear - one or the other - for both are the same. Faith or fear is the expectation of an event that hasn't come to pass or the belief in something that cannot be seen or touched.

A man of fear lives always ont he edge of insanity. A man of faith lives in perpetual reward....the reward of faith is to see what one has believed....Reason never makes room for miracles; faith releases miracles. And in final comparison, faith is a sounder guide than reason. Reason can only be stretched so far, but faith has no limits. The only limit to your realisation of tomorrow is the doubt to which you hold fast today.

But it is a fact that great leaders - great achievers - are rarely realistic by other people's standards....In the game of life, nothing is less important than the score at halftime. The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins....Yours is a future as you choose it.
